Sketchbook

It's been a couple of months since I posted any drawings up here. I haven't been drawing a lot in that time, but I started practicing again recently.

I've been watching these amazing how-to videos by Mark Crilley. They've really made me want to draw again (although every time I see what I come up with, I get that same stupid, "I'll NEVER be as good as he is!" feeling; I hate that). Among other things, I'm learning that there's no One Way to draw -- not even to draw manga. There are thousands of ways to draw a face, and they're all right!

It's very freeing, and (as I've said before) a lot like writing. Anyway, here's what's been going on in my sketchbook lately.

I don't know what that little design at the bottom is, but it would make an awesome tattoo. :)

I've been fighting off the "not-good-enuf-itis" for a while now, as I've been reading a lot. It's a creativity killer, so I stuff it away as best I can.

i remember when i first joined deviantart it nearly made me sick. so much talent out there. some so young. but then i got to meet two other artists from there who have taken me under their wing a bit and taught me tricks and critiqued me hard, and i think it's really made me get better. the thing is there are so many talented people out there! we need to stop comparing with each other and instead cheer each other on and help each other out! :)
i can't draw anime/manga style at all! good renders!

@Susan: I don't know what it is either. A lot of these two pages is just me messing around.

@Natalie: Very much, thank you! A friend of mine teaches at an animation school here in Chiang Mai, and it turns out they use Mark's videos too. I thought that was pretty cool :-)

@aspiring: Thanks, and I totally agree on the comparing. Also (at least for my level), I need to just draw for me. I used to draw something every week for the blog, but it stressed me out. Like I had to outdo myself each week or something! Tossing random sketchbook pages up helps combat that :-)

His images on the video you linked to are pretty amazing. Thanks for the link. Robyn has a birthday coming up, and she loves drawing.

Your pattern reminds me of big snakes. And I love when you share your art.

Thanks, Myrna. You know every time I learn something new about Robyn, she just gets cooler. Tell her I said to never stop drawing, even if she thinks it's no good.

Thanks, Adam! I'll tell her.
